What is a KMZ file?
A KMZ file is a zipped KML file. Google Earth saves placemarks, paths and polygons as KMZ so that the KML document and any icons or photos it references travel together in a single compressed file. Inside the archive you will usually find a doc.kml plus an images folder.

Frequently asked questions
Can I open a KMZ file without Google Earth?
Yes. A KMZ is just a zipped KML file, and this viewer unzips and reads it directly in your web browser. There is nothing to install and no account to create. The placemarks, paths and polygons appear on an OpenStreetMap base map, so you can look at the data on any computer, including work machines where you cannot install Google Earth.
Is my KMZ file uploaded to a server?
No. Unzipping, parsing and drawing the map all happen in your browser with JavaScript, so the file never leaves your device and no copy is stored anywhere. Only the OpenStreetMap background tiles are downloaded from the internet. Files up to 20 MB are supported today, which covers the vast majority of KMZ files exported from Google Earth and GPS apps.
What does the viewer show: placemarks, paths, polygons, folders?
Points are drawn as red dots, and paths and polygons as blue lines and shapes, including MultiGeometry, polygon holes and gx:Track recordings. The layer panel counts the points, lines and polygons and lists the top-level folders. Hover over a feature to see its name, or click it to see its folder path and all of its attributes.
Can I see the attributes (ExtendedData, description tables) of each placemark?
Yes. Placemark names, ExtendedData and SchemaData fields are read as attributes, and description balloons that contain an HTML key/value table are split into separate fields. Click a feature to see every attribute in a popup, or use the attribute table under the map, which is open by default and shows up to 2,000 rows per layer.
Does it show the images and ground overlays inside the KMZ?
Not yet. The viewer shows vector geometry and attributes only. Custom icons, photos embedded in the KMZ and GroundOverlay images such as scanned maps or drone orthophotos are not rendered, and styles like line colours are not applied. This is a known limitation; if you need overlays displayed, please let us know through the contact page.
Can I convert the KMZ after viewing it?
Yes. Choose a format under "Export as" and download the data as KML, KMZ, GPX, GeoJSON, CSV or shapefile without loading the file again. What is the maximum file size, and does it work on a phone?
Files up to 20 MB are supported today, and the map draws the first 20,000 features. The viewer works in current versions of Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox, including on Android phones and iPhones: tap the drop area to pick a KMZ from your files, then pinch to zoom and tap a feature to see its attributes.
